Why is Weight Loss So Overwhelming

“I would need to lose 100 lbs to hit my desired weight.  I could suffer everyday trying to reach it, or I could eat cookies.”  Those might not be your exact thoughts or words, but that is something 1 person said to be about weight loss.

If you have ever tried to lose weight, you know that it can feel overwhelming.  The thought of the drastic changes that you need to make, the disappointment if the scale doesn’t say the number you are hoping for, and the temptation that seems to be everywhere.  The more weight that you have to lose, the worse it feels.

I have talked to a lot of people that have a lot of weight to lose.  “20 lbs is a lot of weight to lose.”  “50 lbs is just such a big number.”  “I need to lose 100 lbs.  That is so overwhelming!”

Does it need to feel that way?  Most people get that magic number in their head, and they obsess over it.  Unfortunately, after a week or 2 (sometimes a day or 2) of diet and exercise, they go back to their old habits.  Why?  A big part is that they are focusing on that big number, and losing a lot of weight can be very overwhelming.

What is the solution?

Start with small changes and small goals.  If you currently eat the all-American diet of whatever looks good (probably fried), you don’t need to start only eating vegetables.  Take baby steps.  Replace 1 meal per day with a healthier meal.  Replace 1 drink that isn’t water with water.

Set small goals.  Yes, your end goal is to lose __________.  However, there are different numbers on the way to _____________.  I was talking to someone that wants to lose 100 lbs, and they are extremely intimidated by that number.  Think about it this way.  If you lose 1 lb per week, you would achieve that goal in less than 2 years.  While 2 years seems like a lot, think about how much time you spent getting to where you are.  It has probably been slowly happening over the course of 5, 10, 20 years.  Focus on 1 lb per week, and you can be looking at a new you before you know it.

Ask your self this question.  Will I be happier eat those cookies, or reaching my goal?  I know that the cookies are a tempting answer, but believe me, it’s not the right one.  Set a goal of losing 1 lb next week.  I highly suggest checking out BEACHBODY ON DEMAND HERE.  Grab a free 14 day trial, gain access to hundreds of workouts, and find a workout that you enjoy.  Here is a quick look at what you get.
