Washing Organic Vegetables

A lot of people don’t take the time to wash organic vegetables.  They figure that since there were no pesticides used on them, why should they have to wash them.  Professor of Food Biology Michael P. Doyle says that you still need to wash organic vegetables.  You do not just wash vegetables because of the pesticides that were used on them.  You wash them because harmful microbes can be on them.  You need to be worried about E. coli, salmonella and more.  Your food is handled by a lot of people before it gets to you.  You do not know who touched it, is they washed their hands, and where those hands have been.  When it comes to washing your food, it is better to be safe than sorry.

Hand Sanitizers

I work in a middle school.  Think of it as a breeding ground for germs.  However, you will not see me busting out the hand sanitizer every time a kid insists on a high 5.  According to Richard L. Gallo, M.D., Ph.D, the chief of the division of dermatology at the University of California, sanitizers are great for an “on the go” hand wash, but use them sparingly.  While they do a great job killing the bad bacteria, they also kill the good stuff.  Using sanitizer too often can actually lead to a weakened immune system because you destroy so much of the good bacteria that your body needs to stay healthy.  So, sanitize occasionally, use soap and water often!

3rd Hand Smoke

Anybody who knows me knows how against smoking I am.  There is nothing positive that people get from it, and it literally kills you.  If you are saying to yourself, “It helps with my stress”, how stressed are you going to be when you have lung cancer?  How is your family going to feel watching you suffer?  Anyways, now you have another reason to avoid smoke.  Studies have shown that 3rd hand smoke is causing respiratory problems.  This is the smoke that settles on your clothes, furniture, in your hair, even on the walls of your house.  It is getting so bad that many experts are saying to not even buy a house if a smoker lived there, or a car if a smoker owned it.

Hopefully something in this article will help you.  If not, at least you learned a few things.

Have A Great Day!
