The Truth About Smoking

It is no secret that smoking is bad…….right?  Here is what the cigarette companies have to say about it (video below if you’d rather watch one of the ads that the tobacco companies have put out).

    • Smoking kills 1200 Americans…………….. PER DAY!
    • Smoking causes a number of different cancers.
    • Cigarettes were DESIGNED to be addictive.  The nicotine actually changes your brain, which is what makes quitting so challenging.

  • Secondhand smoke kills more than 38,000 Americans every single year.  That is more than guns!
  • ******** Exposing children to secondhand smoke can increase risk of the following:
    • sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
    • respiratory infections
    • reduced lung function
    • ear infections, and asthma

You got that, right?  If you are going to smoke, DO NOT smoke around your children!  I don’t care if your parents smoked around you are you are OK.  If that is you, you got lucky.

smokingThese ads are going to be run on TV and in major newspapers around the country.  Why would the cigarette companies put out these ads?  Simple…….they are being forced to!  After fighting the courts for 11 years, big tobacco finally has to show these ads.  They have been fighting it like crazy, and with good reason.  Theoretically, these ads will be bad for business.  Honestly, I wonder if that will really be the case.  People don’t start smoking thinking that it is healthy. Other than wanting to be “cool” (even though most people think it is disgusting), there aren’t any reasons I can think of for people to start smoking.

Let’s take a look at some of my favorite smoker excuses.

“I can quit if I want to, I just don’t want to.”  So let me get this straight.  You don’t want to be around longer to see your kids grow up?  You don’t want to be healthy, and actually able to breath when you get older?

“We are going to die of something.”  So you don’t have a problem with heroin, right?  I mean, after all, we are going to die of something.  What about drunk driving?  Seems, OK, right?  I mean, after all, we are going to die of something.  Sounds pretty crazy when I say it like that, right?  It is just as crazy when you say it about smoking, especially since it kills more than drugs, alcohol, suicide, AIDS, and car crashes….COMBINED!

“It helps with my stress.” This one really bothers me.  First off, there are way better ways to handle stress.  Try working out!  You can go for a walk, run, ride a bike, or of you want to spice it up a little, grab a 14 Day Free Trial of Beachbody on Demand Here.  You can start streaming workout immediately.  As far as smoking to reduce stress goes, think long term.  Smoking may help you feel better for a few minutes, but how will you deal with the stress when you get lung cancer, or your children are sitting by your hospital bed?  Think long term.  Smoking will cause more stress, much more stress.

It is no secret that smoking is harmful.  Now that the tobacco companies are being forced to show you the FACTS, let’s see if people will pay attention.

PLEASE SHARE if you know a smoker.  I know that it seems like they will never quit, but don’t quit on them.
