Obesity is a Disease?

I recently found this in an article and is is disturbing to me.

“The American Medical Assn. voted Tuesday to declare obesity a disease, a move that effectively defines 78 million American adults and 12 million children as having a medical condition requiring treatment.

The nation’s leading physicians organization took the vote after debating whether the action would do more to help affected patients get useful treatment or would further stigmatize a condition with many causes and few easy fixes.”

Many causes and few easy fixes?  I am possibly going to offend a lot of people here, but in MOST cases, obesity is a CHOICE!  Yes, there are certain medical conditions that make it difficult for people to lose weight.  Other than those people, how is it a disease?  If somebody making these people eat junk food?  Is somebody making these people live sedentary lifestyles?

This whole story just contributes to the already huge problem of people wanted a quick fix for everything.  There is no lack of resources for people on living healthy.  If anything, there is too much info.  So, here it is.  I am going to sum up all of the research for those people suffering from obesity.

Your new biggest drink is water.  Not soda, coffee or beer.  It’s not lattes, cappuccinos or milk shakes.  It’s WATER!

If it’s fried, DON’T Eat It!

Fruits and vegetables = GOOD!

When it comes to pasta and bread, whole wheat needs to be the FIRST ingredient.  Not wheat, or enriched wheat, WHOLE WHEAT!

THERE IS NO MAGIC PILL!

People often ask me what the best exercise for weight loss is.  The answer is simple, it’s the one you will actually do.  DO SOMETHING!  I don’t care if it’s walking, jogging, riding a bike, dancing, basketball, swimming, etc.

The problem that I see is that people lack motivation.  They say that they want to lose weight, but that cookie is too tempting.  So, FIND YOU MOTIVATION!  I’ll make it simple.  Do you have someone in your life that you love?  Kids, a spouse, parents, friends?  There is a good chance that is you stay obese, your quality of life is going to suffer, and there is a chance that you are actually shortening your life.  So, what means more to you, eating that cake and watching TV or spending time with the ones you love?

If you really need a structured approach, than I suggest checking out a Beachbody Challenge Pack.

These packs take away your excuse!  You select a fitness program and a flavor of Shakeology (known as “the healthiest meal of the day”).  Each program is created by a world class trainer, and includes a nutrition guide, fitness tips, and FREE coaching from your Beachbody coach (me).
